I voted for Barack Obama

February 5th, 2008

I don’t consider myself to be that politically savvy, but considering I’ve read a lot, watched a lot, and thought a lot about the upcoming presidential election, I thought I would mention that I’ve decided to vote for Barack Obama. MomWonder, KidWonder and I went out for a nice stroll this morning to vote in our cozy little Westchester town/village, and voted in the NY state primary this morning. Yes, I know that I chose not to vote for a Senator of New York. Yes, I know that I chose not to vote for a woman who has a legitimate chance to become the first woman president in US history. Yes, I know that I chose to vote for a man who has a legitimate chance to become the first African-American president in US history. Yes, I know that I chose not to vote for a woman that would put Bill Clinton in the same building as the Oval Office.

I’d like to think that none of that was a factor, and it wasn’t, on a conscious level. What made my decision harder was that the candidates’ positions on issues were so similar and that the last big debate in LA turned into a massive love fest.

In the end, I thought that Obama would have more success working with both parties on his initiatives. Although his tenure in the Senate has been short, I think he has the right personality to bring both parties together. Clinton has too much of an acrimonious relationship with the Republican party, in my opinion, to get things done.

Since I voted for Barack, I will keep this badge up until after the general election:

P.S. I really wish New York wasn’t so difficult with party registration. I would normally like to be registered Independent, but align with a party when a primary approaches, then register Independent on the way out. I’ve had lots of problems voting in New York that way, in fact I missed voting in the primary in 2000 because I “only” put in my voter registration change 3 MONTHS before the primary. Boo New York.

  • I'm not an American, so I can't vote. But I live in America, so I have an opinion on who runs this country. And if I had a say, Obama would have my vote. The whole world needs someone like him at the helm...

    Thanks for the follow-up!

@C4 - thanks for asking, it is a good question. For me, our engagement in Iraq and other potential global conflicts is a huge key to our economic situation at home. Obama has made stronger statements about bringing our troops home, and I like hearing that. I think in other areas, such as in his proposed healthcare initiative, Obama's take on things seems more reasonable.

As I say above, its important to pick someone who you feel can get things done. With a razor-thin advantage the Democrats hold in the Senate, there isn't too much leeway in votes down party lines. Obama to me is the candidate who could possibly transcend that and bring the parties together on issues.

You could say, in the end, that I voted my gut. And after all of the coverage, debates, and articles, I'm comfortable with that. :-)

    Tdrapeau,

These may sound like loaded questions and I promise I am not trying to be a jerk (I am honestly curious for your answers):

What initiatives/policies of Obama do you like/support?

How do these initiatives/policies differ from Hillary Clinton's?

And like Lisa, I, too, am glad I found your blog

  • I'm so glad to hear that you voted your heart and mind. I'm an Obama supporter too. I'm watching the Primary results and hoping that it goes his way.

    Glad I found your blog.
