I got a letter from the government, the other day. I opened it, and read it, it said they were suckers. They wanted me for their army or whatever… picture me giving a Damn! I said Never.
Sorry, had a PE moment there. So I got a 1099-G notice today, a Statement of Tax Overpayment. There is a lengthy “Explanation of amount reported to IRS”, the actual amount/tax year/document locator number, and an additional explanation of the statement.
Explanation of amount reported to IRS:

So… “Refer to the federal Form 1040 instructions or contact the IRS to determine if this amount (including any adjustments) must be reported on your federal return.” Then “This is only an informational statement for your records; you do not have to respond. Do not file this with your return.”
So should I care, or not care? Ah, the IRS. My tax dollars at work. I tried calling today, but the office was closed (Saturday). I’ll call in on Monday, and see if I end up getting a humorous explanation as to the seeming contradiction - stay turned, I’ll update this post.
Update (Monday morning January 28th): So I called the number, the same number that gave me a “we are closed” message, and get this - the number doesn’t lead to a human, its a RECORDED MESSAGE. So I was shooed away on Saturday because, apparently, the recorded message doesn’t work on weekends. Plus it didn’t serve to explain matters any further, although apparently the amount on the form would matter more if I were itemizing my deductions. Nice.
