Flocking to try a new browser

October 24th, 2007

I tried installing Flock 1.0 (which is actually Flock 1.0 RC3), and had some problems. I sent feedback to Flock, hoping to get a response:

I installed Flock 1.0 RC3 on a PowerMac G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.3.9. Previously, I had installed Flock v0.9.

Install appeared to complete cleanly. I went to start Flock, and it imported settings from somewhere (not sure where – it didn’t ask my permission to do so), and then promptly crashed.

I tried running it again, and it just crashed. I then looked at your FAQ, and deleted my search history file. Not sure why I had to do this… if there was corruption, why not simply remove the search history folder?

After deleting my search history file, I tried running it again, and got a dialog box saying I already had a copy of Flock running on my system. Except I don’t. I checked my running processes, and don’t see /Flock/i anywhere.

So, in short, can you improve upon your install/config/startup user experience? I am going to reboot my Mac server now in the hopes that this state will be cleared… not sure of the chances for success.

Update (9:38pm EST): I rebooted my machine, same error came up, you already have a copy of Flock running on your system. I also run Netscape Navigator 9.0, so I closed that, wondering if Flock considered Netscape to be Flock. It didn’t, same error. I read the Flock forums, saw a post saying you should remove your entire Flock folder from the Application Support library, which I did. Now it just crashes on startup, doesn’t even produce the dialog box. So I uninstalled it. If the Flock team gets back to me, I’ll try it out again.

Update (Nov 2, 6:46am EST): I never got a response from Flock, but saw that they released their final (final) 1.0. I installed it…. and have the same problems. Methinks it doesn’t work on OS 10.3, but at this point there seems to be no way of proving it from the outside.

Update (Jan 15, 12:27pm EST): Here is an explanation I just found in Flock’s FAQs

We are currently investigating why Flock doesn’t work on 10.3.9 but haven’t found the solution just yet. You should also know that in the very near future this operating system will NOT be supported by Mozilla (which Flock is based on).

Well, crap. I would have upgraded to Leopard already, but I’m running the Server edition of Mac OS X, and it just isn’t as cheap to upgrade as the client version. Oh well, I guess I’ll try it again once I upgrade.

Update (Jan 20, 7:39am EST): Flock v1.0.5 fixes the bugs that were stopping it from running in Mac OS 10.3.9. Clayton and Evan Hamilton of Flock stopped by to let me know. Thanks guys!
