And I’ll tell you why. Roger Federer is one of those once in a generation type of players. Luckily there have been 3 in my lifetime: Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and Roger. I was fortunate enough to watch Michael Jordan from the 1986 playoffs, where he tortured my Boston Celtics, through the years building up to the championship teams of the early ’90s. Jordan was simply better than the field, in seemingly every possible way. He transcended his opponents. He ran around them, over them, seemingly through them. He scored at will. He got the ball, game on the line, and people knew he would score. It gives you that “hair standing on the back of your neck” feeling.
Tiger has been the same way. Going into the last day of tournaments, if he’s within shouting distance, he all of a sudden becomes the heavy favorite. Tiger hits shots that are just plain better than other players. You watch the game and think to yourself, why is it that other players don’t notice this and do the same thing? His way seems better…
Roger is the same way. Outside of the French Open, where Rafael Nadal continues to be the thorn in his side, Roger is just plain better than everyone. Every time. He is the class of Wimbledon, and dances across the court with such agility that it seems like his opponents are just hitting the ball right to him. He is extremely strong on the hard courts as well. His aura was no more evident than yesterday’s final match against Djokovic, who really had his opportunities to win. But Federer turned out to be a charmed player, who, just like Jordan and Woods, when he needed the shots, he just had them. That is greatness. And that is why you should watch Roger play tennis.
I miss watching Jordan dunk on people, making it seem as though he was the only pro on the floor and every other player was in high school. Roger brings that feeling back.
Has anyone had the privilege of watching another athlete with a similar command of the game?
