I started off today with a monster of a video card sitting back in the Amazon box it came in, with a return slip ready to go. The trip to the UPS store was uneventful and quick (I didn’t even have to pay shipping on the return, nice job Amazon).
I stopped off at CompUSA (no, not one of the ones that is closing), and picked up a PCI video card. I ended up choosing the ATI Radeon X1300, 256 Mb DDR-2 Memory, DVI Out. Definitely a step down from the GeForce 8800 GTS, which I could swear needed 1.21 Gigawatts of power to run. However, looks like more than enough for me, as I now have my PowerMac and Dell PowerEdge sitting side by side, with both monitors running 1920×1200. Sweet.
So what am I doing to celebrate? Installing World of Warcraft, what else? I didn’t splurge for the WoW special keyboard, since I’m already painfully a n00b so why buy the special wristband when you don’t realize that the “real” players don’t use wristbands, they just close their eyes and meditate.
Given that I’m in full geek mode, I have to say, today at work I was asked to give someone administrator access to a forum application. I investigated, and was told that the name of the administrator role was “Cascading Wizard”. Taken aback, I was torn as to whether or not to ask for Level 5 Mage with fireball ability, or to ask if I too could join the fellowship of 9.
Anyhow, while I’ve been typing this, the 5 DVD install of World of Warcraft has been humming along. So I will soon see the new ATI card in its full glory. Hope it can keep up.

I just want to verify what I’m reading here. You got the Radeon X1300 running on your PowerEdge? The reason I’m asking is that I’ve been trying for several weeks to get an NVidia GeForce 6600 [PCI - I made the same mistake you did with PCIe/PCIx originally] with no luck - the monitor just blanks while booting. Did you have to reconfigure anything [other than drivers, of course]?
BTW, the PowerEdge 2800 has PCIe slots as well as PCIx slots - they’re just x4 and x8 lanes, and video cards use an x16 lane - they still don’t fit.
TheDauthi - Yes, the Radeon X1300 works just fine on my PowerEdge.
