Au revoir Paris…
Hullo England!
I was quite anxious to get on with the London leg of the trip that I ended up getting to Charles de Gaulle airport several hours too early. All that French hospitality, I guess.
If you are looking for a place that makes you feel like you’re in a mental asylum, with no ventilation, white bathroom tile floors, garbled PA announcements, and nothing, not even a bathroom, inside the gate, then you should definitely spend an afternoon in Charles de Gaulle airport. All it was missing was padded walls.
And I looked over at the “deluxe”/special people’s room, and there was a thin door with a circular window showing the inside of a room that looked exactly like the room I was sitting in, only with less people. Nothing says swank like a door separating you from other people waiting in a room that looks exactly the same. Awesome. I really regret not spending the extra several hundred euros to get into that select club. Maybe next time.
But enough about the damn airport… off to London!
I took a ride in a black London taxi from the airport to Hotel Cavendish, which is a really nice and cozy family guesthouse on 75 Gower Street, London WC1E 6HJ. The telephone number to the hotel is 020 7636 9079, although I have no idea if the phone works or I’ll get the message.
I took a stroll after checking in and downed a couple of pints (getting the recurring theme, eh?) at The Pint Pot, which looks like a college bar based on the proximity to the University of London and the young patrons. Thursday night was karaoke night, so I was treated to some amazing treatments of classic rock ‘n roll.
Today I went to the British Museum, which is b-friggin-eautiful. Amazing. <enter adjective here>. I was in awe. I saw probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the museum in 4 hours, so I’ll go back at least once to see the rest. The ancient artifacts are superb; its like the Met times 10.
So I’m taking a bit of a break for tea. Don’t know what later brings.
